What decides one of these is water depth at the lift, weight of the boat and spacing between pilings — measured before the order, not after it.
Size the lift to the loaded weight, not the brochure weight. Published dry weight excludes fuel, water, batteries, gear, and anything permanently added since the boat left the factory — and fuel alone is six to seven pounds a gallon before you count a full water tank. The usual guidance is to work from the heaviest realistic loaded condition and then leave margin above it. Beam and length matter as much as weight, because they decide the cradle and the spacing of the bunks, and a hull unsupported in the right places is a hull that distorts.
The water and the bottom choose the lift. Four-post and cantilever lifts stand on the bottom and suit shallow, firm, stable conditions. Piling-mounted lifts hang from pilings already driven and suit deeper water and bigger tidal range. Floating lifts rise and fall with the water and are the answer where the bottom is soft or the level swings too much for a fixed frame. Elevator and davit systems handle steep banks and seawalls. Bottom composition, water depth at low water, and tidal range are the three facts any supplier will ask for first.
Two things kill lifts, and both are avoidable. Corrosion is chosen at purchase: saltwater and brackish water demand the right materials and coatings — aluminium, hot-dip galvanised steel, stainless fasteners — and a freshwater-specified lift in salt will not last. Electricity near water is the other: shore power for a lift is governed work, with GFCI protection and specific requirements for wiring around docks, and it is not a job to improvise. Solar-powered lifts exist partly to avoid running a supply out at all.
A presentation set. Venerabull is in its first phase and is signing its first manufacturers — the models on this page are our own, shown so a maker can see the page their line would get. As lines are signed their real products and photography replace these, and anything that was never inventory comes down.
