What decides one of these is ceiling height, room width, room depth and power — measured before the order, not after it.

What decides the fit

Ceiling height
Around 9 ft 6 in to 10 ft 6 in covers most adults swinging most clubs. 10 ft is the figure most people plan to, and it is the point where the room stops dictating the swing.
Room width
12 ft and up lets you centre the hitting position and swing either-handed, which is what most people actually want once more than one person uses the room.
Room depth
12 to 15 ft is workable and common in a garage bay. Tracking units that sit behind the ball need part of that depth, so confirm what the unit you are looking at needs behind the hitting position.
Power
A simulator is a light electrical load compared with everything else on this site - a projector, a tracking unit and a computer. A standard household circuit generally carries it. The thing worth planning is outlet placement, because a ceiling-mounted projector and a floor-level computer want power in two different places.

Worth knowing before you order

Why ceiling

Because the club goes higher than the golfer does, and it goes highest at the top of the backswing rather than at impact. The figure that matters is not your height but your height plus the club above your hands, with the shaft near vertical, plus the clearance you need to not think about it. Taller players and longer drivers need more. It is also the one dimension you cannot fix later — screens, mats, projectors and launch monitors can all be changed, and a ceiling cannot.

Monitor types

Two families, and they want opposite things from a room. Radar units track the ball in flight and therefore need distance behind and in front of the hitting position to see enough of it — they are happier outdoors or in a long room. Camera and photometric units read the ball and clubface in the instant around impact from very close range, usually overhead or beside the ball, which suits a short room but makes them fussier about lighting, ball markings and exact placement. Neither is simply better; the room usually decides.

Screen vs net

An impact screen is a projection surface that also has to stop a ball at speed, and the two jobs pull against each other. It hangs with deliberate slack and is contained in a frame with padding around it, so the ball is absorbed rather than rebounded. A net is cheaper and more forgiving of a small room but gives you nothing to project onto. What ruins either one is a hard surface behind it — the screen or net needs room to move, and a wall directly behind it takes the load instead.

A presentation set. Venerabull is in its first phase and is signing its first manufacturers — the models on this page are our own, shown so a maker can see the page their line would get. As lines are signed their real products and photography replace these, and anything that was never inventory comes down.
