What decides one of these is clearance to walls and anything combustible, electrical supply and ceiling height above the kiln — measured before the order, not after it.

What decides the fit

Clearance to walls and anything combustible
Eighteen inches or more on every side to anything combustible is the usual specified minimum, and it is also roughly the room you need to load it comfortably.
Electrical supply
Fifty to sixty amps at 240V on a dedicated circuit is what a full-size studio kiln expects. It is nearly always a new circuit rather than an existing one.
Ceiling height above the kiln
Nine feet or more is comfortable, and it gives a vent somewhere to go without fighting the ceiling.

Worth knowing before you order

Why circuit

A kiln is one of the largest continuous electrical loads people install at home, and continuous is the important word. It draws near its rated current for hours, so the circuit is sized above the running draw rather than to it, it has to be dedicated, and the wire gauge and breaker must match the kiln rather than the outlet that happens to be there. Small test kilns run on ordinary household circuits; anything with real chamber volume does not. The rated current is on the kiln's own plate, and that plate is what an electrician sizes to.

Ventilation

Firing releases fumes — from the clay, from glaze components, from anything organic burning out — and some of them should not be breathed. So a kiln needs either a dedicated vent system, usually a downdraft that pulls through the kiln and out of the building, or a room genuinely ventilated to outside. A downdraft vent has a second benefit: it improves atmosphere and evenness inside the chamber. A closed garage with the door shut is the arrangement to avoid.

Clearance

Kilns run hot on the outside as well as the inside, so there is a required clearance to walls and to anything combustible on every side, and a requirement for what the kiln stands on. Concrete is the simple answer; a combustible floor needs a non-combustible base. Leave more room than the minimum where you can, because you will want to walk around it to load, and the clearance figure assumes nothing is stored against it — which is exactly what happens in a garage over time.

A presentation set. Venerabull is in its first phase and is signing its first manufacturers — the models on this page are our own, shown so a maker can see the page their line would get. As lines are signed their real products and photography replace these, and anything that was never inventory comes down.
